This article is about what you need to notice after a crash.
Hard earned experience tells me that you will encounter this sooner or later :-(
Therefore the following article could become very important...

After a recovery using software, you can't rely on your thumbs shown by WinXP in you folder(s).
Therefore you need to ensure the quality of your pictures by opening each and everyone of them.

The following is a preliminary text about this subject. I will later enhance this topic.

One of the flaws you can encounter is the following.

The little thumb (WinXP, large icons), shows that everything is perfect (though underexposed), but
a double click shows that in reality the picture is damaged.

It looks like a puzzle concisting of 3 pieces. The two pieces in the bottom are in the wrong place and is furthermore darkened.
The background in the left picture is corrected by switching the two pieces in the bottom of the puzzle, by using "PhotoShop Elements 2".
The two dark pieces could be lighten but it won't be perfect anyway. Newermind - this picture as such was bad from the beginning and is only shown here to explain our recovery topic.
The fact is, I recovered everything of value. My point here: Just because Windows XP shows an okay thumbnail, is not said that the picture is okay and in correct condition.

Selected after
the recovery
Thump view (large icons) Win default viewer (double click) Opened in PE2
1. Nearly / Almost
Both the Win default viewer and "PhotoShop Elements2", opened the picture without any comments.
2. Hmmm
The Win default viewer opened the picture without any comments but PE2 said something about truncated or damaged.
3. Not a bit.
Description same as case 1.
4. Half in PE2
The Windows default viewer could not open the JPG file.
5.
If the thump view / large icons was NOT on, nobody would know what picture that was lost.
6.
Pe2 show the most but including things that was not on the picture.
7. Complete recovery
:-)

The pictures shown above that was not complete recovered, maybe damaged by
the creation of the Windows recyclebin.
Okay, I admit that before the recovery, Windows said: NO FILES, and I couldn't see anything either.
A conclution maybe that the recovery software I used (Get Data Back for FAT) is a lot clever than
my Microsoft Windows, but what is not that - I can't remember anything that isnt...
BTW. don't cry if you don't have a Visa card, I hope that I also get time testing some freeware.
Anyhow, I find it very strange that Windows XP can figure out a thumb anyway for an image that is
so much damaged as shown in some of the above examples.
Be sure that I will return to this topic, later.

Anyhow, we now got one more reason for using either the below "jpg2numbers.vbs", or the "jpg2dateTime.wsf" script (WinXP)
that you can download from the previous page.

Scripts.

NoRecyclebin.vbs
Purpose: Prevent Windows from overwriting a hard drive that you want to recover.
The creation of a recyclebin could easily make your data unreadable.
(don't just right click this script file but read the code and thereby try to understand how, and why the following script is working).
I have put a lot of comments, so it shouldn't be that difficult.

PS. Sorry about my english, so I hope you enjoy my code, instead.
BTW.: You maybe have to press the F5 key.

4 Useful Scripts. (Last updated November 2004)
  · jpg2numbers.vbs · Make unique Jpeg filenames.
·· move2onePath.vbs ·· (Unique names has its advantages).
··· Identical.wsf ··· Rename any copy, Put "[" in its filename.
  ···· Del If [ in Jpeg.vbs ····

To copy within a textbox: Hold Ctrl, Press A, Press C or X

For internal use. You may ignore this jumbled script, (Wrote-In-2-Minutes)

If your recovery software cannot detect your camera memory card in your card reader, then let NOT Scandisk fix an error such as this one, but you may allow Scandisk to fix another ONE. Then repeat running your recovery software.
When the recovery work is done, then you can let Scandisk fix whatever it like.

Scandisk want to delete invalid data:

If not Scandisk can fix it, then you can try format the card, then repeat running your recovery software.
BTW. Do not try to copy a file to a write protected SD Card in a real DOS session (used a boot floppy with CONFIG.SYS, DEVICE=USB driver)...
In the same second when you see the CANNOT COPY FILE... message, all data is gone. Strange! Moreover,
you have to reformat the USB disk, flash card.

I will later (January 2005); upload both a CONFIG.SYS and an AUTOEXEC.BAT file that show your how to access
an USB device, e.g. a SanDisk Cruzer, (it won't work with all card readers, e.g. Lexar Media,...)
